Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s Disease is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes memory loss, personality changes, and dementia. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the USA. Often referred to as “Type III Diabetes,” the link between diabetes and Alzheimer’s is strong, indicating that insulin resistance plays a significant role in the development and progression of this disease.
The Alzheimer’s Epidemic
Alzheimer’s Disease is a growing public health concern. In the United States, millions of people are affected, with the numbers expected to rise dramatically in the coming years. Addressing Alzheimer’s requires a comprehensive approach that targets insulin resistance, reduces inflammation, and promotes overall brain health.
The Role of Insulin Resistance
Insulin resistance is a critical factor in Alzheimer’s Disease. Elevated insulin levels and insulin resistance can lead to impaired mitochondrial function in brain cells, increased inflammation, and the accumulation of amyloid plaques. These factors contribute to cognitive decline and neurodegeneration.
Eternity Medicine’s Approach to Alzheimer’s Disease

Comprehensive Diagnostics
We start with a thorough assessment of your health, using advanced diagnostics to measure insulin sensitivity, blood sugar levels, and other critical markers. This detailed evaluation allows us to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.

Personalized Nutrition Plans
Proper nutrition is essential for managing and preventing Alzheimer’s Disease. Our personalized nutrition plans focus on:
- Whole Foods: Promoting the consumption of unprocessed, nutrient-rich foods.
- Low Carbohydrate Diets: Reducing carbohydrate intake to improve insulin sensitivity and stabilize blood sugar levels.
- Ketogenic Diets: Implementing a ketogenic diet to shift the body’s energy source from glucose to fats, which can support brain health and reduce amyloid plaque formation.

Lifestyle and Behavioral Coaching
Lifestyle modifications are crucial for managing and preventing Alzheimer’s Disease. Our coaching includes:
- Exercise Programs: Customized exercise routines to enhance metabolic function and support cognitive health.
- Stress Management: Techniques to reduce stress, which can exacerbate insulin resistance and cognitive decline.
- Sleep Optimization: Strategies to ensure adequate and quality sleep, as poor sleep can negatively impact brain health.

What is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a condition in which the peripheral nerves (the nerves in your body, aside from your spinal cord and brain) are damaged and/or not working properly. Rather than transmitting pain signals, they are the source of the pain signals. More than 10% of the population are affected by peripheral neuropathy. The reason that so many people are affected is because of the unique architecture of the peripheral nervous system. All of the peripheral nerves have a macro-length; in other words, while the nucleus is located near the spinal cord, each (sensory) single nerve cell will stretch from its origin in the periphery (e.g. the great toe), approximately three feet to its end where it synapses with second order neurons in the spinal cord. Each nucleus synthesizes its own proteins, enzymes, etc. which are crucial to a single cell’s health and operation; it must supply the entire length of the cell. For perspective, if the nucleus were the size of Manhattan, the nerve would stretch all the way between New York City and Las Vegas.
Our Physicians

More than 70-80% of peripheral neuropathy is caused by diabetes (insulin resistance) about 15% is due to chemotherapy, other toxins, alcohol, and viral infections and 5-10% have no known cause.
Most neuropathy treated at our clinic is peripheral, distal (in the extremities away from the center of the body) and symmetric (which means that the lumbar region is not likely the cause).
As those of you who have this difficult problem know, neuropathy is characterized by pain, numbness, sensory loss, hyperalgesia (pain with normal stimulus), allodynia (pain with not normally painful stimulus), most often starting in the feet and lower legs (the longest nerves), but also sometimes in the hands, arms and even the trunk. Neuropathy is also accompanied by a variety of uncomfortable feelings (dysesthesias, which are painful electric shocks), motor dysfunction and balance problems. Symptoms vary widely from person to person, but they can be quite debilitating and require walking aids.
